Behind the Scenes: Botox + Fillers

It’s a beautiful Friday, so let’s talk a little bit about what might often seem like a dirty word in the beauty industry. Celebs deny it, there’s tons of misconceptions about it, and I’m here to tell you a little bit about my personal experience with it. What am I talking about?

Well, Botox. I’ve always had a fascination with instant gratification–it’s part of what I love about extensions and hair transformations. The feeling of being transformed within just a few hours is amazing. It’s no wonder I’m slightly obsessed with every and anything beauty, including all of the latest innovations inside of the medispa world.

If just the idea of Botox makes you cringe away a little because you might not know anything about it or because you’ve heard any horror stories, bare with me while I tell you about my own experience and what I’ve learned in my years of receiving Botox treatments. (Spoiler alert—all good things ahead).

When you break down what exactly Botox is and how it works, I’ll admit, it can sound a little scary. Botox is actually the brand name for a specific toxin, just like the brand name of a prescription medication. The procedure is FDA-approved and, like many medical procedures, is considered quite safe when performed by a doctor educated in the treatment application.

Botox works by blocking the signals from nerves to muscles, relaxing the muscles and taking away the ability for them to contract. This is why it seems like the wrinkles melt away—the muscle is no longer contracting to create the wrinkle or line. The treatment is injected using a tiny needle and literally only takes a few minutes to receive. It can take up to a week to see the full effects, but after that you’ve got several months of wrinkle free bliss!

The first time I ever received Botox I was super excited (only a tiny bit nervous), and ready to see instant results. I remember leaving the chair, driving home thinking, “Well, that didn’t do anything…” It took around a week for the Botox to settle, and then came another new experience—feeling like a baby elephant was literally sitting on my forehead.

That weird pressure lasted maybe another week or two and then I could easily forget I had even received the treatment in the first place (except, of course, the smoothness of my forehead). Now I’ve received treatments for the last seven years, (excluding the two years of pregnancy) and if you haven’t figured it out yet… I’m completely obsessed. It generally lasts around 5-6 months for me, and there’s no downtime. I’ve also never had any (knock on wood) bad experiences. Using a reputable doctor is very important to me so I have always done my homework and used personal recommendations to find a doctor.

Garnish Studio recently partnered with Regenesis MD for a Braids & Botox event, and I decided to branch out and try filler for the first time. I’m in LOVE with it. It smoothed out every area that I had any concern with and looks sooo natural. As women, we often have to walk a narrow line between beauty expectations, and being shamed for certain beauty services.

As an extension specialist, I often meet with women who don’t want anyone to know they have had to turn to extensions to solve their hair concerns. I am a firm believe in the power of feeling beautiful in your own skin, and that means making personal choices about what will give you more self-confidence and appreciation for what you see in the mirror. If that means Botox and hair extensions, then babe, you’re in good company.

Botox and Fillers can be a bit of a taboo to talk about, but there’s no need to be scared of them. I’m always happy to talk more about my personal experiences, so if you have any questions, drop them in the comment section below or send me a note through the contact form.
