23 Jun White Space: A Lesson in Self Love
Self Love. Are you giving yourself enough?
It’s a phrase we hear tossed around a lot these days in various contexts, but what does it really mean in terms of your daily life? It would seem self-explanatory. Self Love = loving yourself, but actually applying that can be, well, pretty damn tough. Why is it so hard for us to apply love to ourselves, and why is it SO important?
For me, self love is all about balance. It means taking care of my whole self, body AND mind. If you read my blog post last week about goals, you know that my goal-oriented lifestyle means I am hustling hard, all the time. (If you didn’t get a chance to read it, you can check it out here). Sometimes it’s easy to dismiss self-care as low priority when compared to working towards goals and taking care of life responsibilities.
The important thing to remember is that you can’t do your best work, or put maximum effort into caring for loved ones or achieving goals if your body and mind aren’t in the best possible condition. It may not always be easy to set aside time for yourself—sometimes you have to literally carve out time to incorporate the things YOU love into your life. I call it “Carving out White Space.” This is not just a haphazard afternoon that you find yourself sitting in front of the TV, but an intentional, planned out block of space that you purposely will NOT fill. I know it might sound crazy, but how many of you guys can relate?
If you’re anything like me, “time off” quickly becomes full of appointments, task lists, and errands. The relaxation of taking some time off never actually comes. About a year ago, my business coach encouraged me to put this into practice…honoring time off as if it were a literal appointment on my calendar.
Let me tell you… THIS HAS BEEN LIFE CHANGING.
Trust me, I know exactly what it feels like to live the hustle hard lifestyle where you feel like you can never stop working (because GOALS), but I promise if you set aside some time to actually decompress it will set you up to be in an even better place to continue pursuing your dreams. When you refresh and recharge you can devote more energy back into your grind because you actually have some to pull from.
So sit back, take a breath, and then dig into your busy schedule and find some time—a day, an afternoon, at the very least a solid hour—when you can do something JUST for you. Go get your nails done, take a walk by yourself, go shopping, or just sit on the porch with a glass of wine—whatever YOUR bliss is, find it for just a little while and I guarantee you’ll feel better after.
You’ll wake up the next day recharged and ready to dive back into life. If you think about it, self-care is really the greatest investment you can ever make—afterall, you’re taking care of the only person who can achieve your dreams—YOU.
Let me know in the comments what you’re going to do in your next Carved out White Space. I’ll be toasting you with a glass of rosé! If you on IG, hashtag your YOU time with #mywhitespace, can’t wait to see!
